I-55 from South of I-80 to South of Weber Road: Northbound & Southbound Designed Overlay Drainage, Phase III Project

R.M. Chin & Associates, Inc. (CHIN) provided Phase III consulting services for the Illinois Department of
Transportation’s (IDOT) I-55 resurfacing project between I-80 and Weber Road, Northbound and Southbound. For
this 13.6-mile stretch of highway, most of the work was performed at night.

Project Description

The project’s scope of work included the following major items: milling of existing HMA surface; placing 180,000 tons of Polymerized Hot-Mix Asphalt, SMA Binder, and Surface Course under PFP; 50,000 tons of N70 HMA Binder and Surface Course under QC/QA; HMA patching and Longitudinal Joint Sealing; HMA shoulder patching and reconstruction; aggregate shoulder placement; installation of storm sewer; and much more.

Quality Assurance and Control

The CHIN team and its subconsultants ensured that all sampling procedures were followed for PFP to ensure
samples were taken at the proper tonnages and cores cut at random locations. The survey was utilized to calculate the roadway areas and to provide updated bridge clearances after the roadway was resurfaced.
