Project Budget

Chicago Department of Aviation

R.M. Chin & Associates, Inc. (CHIN) provided civil design services for the Chicago Department of Aviation to rehabilitate Runway 13C-31C and all the associated taxiways. Runway 13C-31C is one of Chicago Midway International Airport’s two primary runways and was last rehabilitated in 2014. The pavement rehabilitation included repairs and replacements, geometry improvements, grading improvements, electrical/lighting improvements, pavement markings, drainage improvements, and other miscellaneous work.

CHIN’s Role and Expertise

CHIN brought extensive expertise and responsibility in managing multiple aspects of the project. This included overseeing taxiway alignments and profiles to ensure optimal functionality, designing precise taxiway geometry and typical sections to meet current aviation standards, and meticulously planning pavement jointing, elevation, and grooving for optimal runway and taxiway drainage, durability, and performance. Additionally, CHIN was tasked with detailing pavement specifications and ensuring accurate quantities for all pavement-related components, which is crucial for maintaining budgetary and logistical integrity throughout the project lifecycle.

Outcomes

The outcomes of this rehabilitation effort were transformative for Chicago Midway International Airport. Upon completion, the runway and taxiway enhancements extended the lifespan of critical infrastructure and improved operational reliability, mobility, and safety. These enhancements underscore CHIN’s commitment to delivering sustainable and practical solutions that elevate infrastructure standards and support the continued growth and efficiency of Chicago Midway International Airport.
