FPCC Dan Ryan Woods
The R.M. Chin and Associates (CHIN) team provided program management services for site improvements at the Forest Preserve District of Cook County’s (FPCC) Dan Ryan Woods. As a sub-consultant to Wood PLC, this contract was under FPCC’s Landscape/Civil Capital Improvement Program and included design and construction oversight.
CHIN oversaw the design process, which included drawing review, issuing comments, permit assistance, preparation of bid posting, and bid review. In addition, construction phase services included administering and documenting site meetings, preparing inspector daily reports, measuring completed pay item quantities, critical issue guidance, and review of invoices, change orders, quality and testing reports, and closeout documents.
Project Description
The contract called for several site improvements and additions to Dan Ryan Woods, including:
» Construction of a 1,300sf accessible treehouse and surrounding nature play area for children
» A 64-step staircase for an accompanying sled hill
» New gathering areas consisting of concrete pavement and seating
» Concrete access paths to picnic shelters and comfort stations
» Lighting upgrades
» Repairs to the site’s historic aqueduct
Challenges
The project required the securing of grants to meet specified requirements. Also, rehabilitating the historic limestone masonry aqueduct required extraordinary attention to detail to preserve its integrity.
